Software

Note: Many of the links below direct to the MHMF software server, which is only accessible from computers on the UNC campus and hospital networks, including VPN (for off campus access).  Please contact Wendy or Michael if you have problems connecting to these links, or want our printed instructions about installing VPN for off campus access.

Currently Vista is not recommended for most imaging software.  If you do run Vista it is recommended to have no less than 2GByte of RAM.

Viewing:

• Confocal Assistant (for Biorad files) $free ** Win3.1 to XP (16 bit Windows, short 8.3 files names only)
• Image Surfer $free - manual   Multichannel rendering (isosurface, max. proj, volume rendering), Win2K, XP
• Leica LCS Light and manual $free ** WinNT4 or XP (not Win2K or Vista)
• Volocity - Viewing, rendering, analysis, tracking, colocalization and other quantification.  Available on the Snell image processing workstation at MHMF
• Volocity LE  download and register $free, but requires registration Windows or Mac.  See Improvision web site
• Zeiss viewers and manuals $free ** Win2K-XP
• IrfanView $free
• ImageJ $free from the Research Services Branch of NIMH & NINDS at NIH

Processing:

• LeicaLCS $free (off line analysis) is on two image processing workstation, Brewster and Snell - image processing, e,g, color overlays, export image sequences as AVI format movies, 3D rendering, FRET, FRAP measurement, etc.

Conversion:

• tiffsplit4 - manual **  Command prompt in Win32 (WinNT+  to  WinXP+)
• bmp2pic ** - convert bitmap series into a Biorad pic format file
• pic2bmp ** - convert a Biorad pic format file into a bitmap series
• XnView $free

Bitmap:

• bmef - extended focus calculation from a series of bitmap format images.  Generates average, maximum or minimum projections

Video:

• QuickTime 
• Videdit 1.1 $free ** Win3.1-XP  (16 bit Windows, short 8.3 file names only) also available from Microsoft.  (Does not run on Win x64)
• Adobe Premiere

• Most software is Windows centric.
