Usage charges are set to recover cost of maintenance, supplies and training staff.  Rates are determined in accordance with the Recharge Facility rules at UNC and in consultation with the Office of Sponsored Research.  Exact rates are posted here and are incurred while logged onto the acquisition computer associated with the resource. 

Note that these rates are for educational institutions, NIH entities and certain other Government entities (e.g. EPA).  Corporate rates are 3 times the rates listed below.

Please plan ahead and include usage fees on grant budgets.  Alternatively Office of Research, School of Medicine allows 100% of your grant contribution to MHMF service contract(s) to be credited against usage fees, and 50% of staff salary contributions can be credited to usage costs.

Usage charges (Effective April 1, 2006)

• $8.75 per 15 minute interval for Leica and Zeiss confocal microscopes
• $6.25 per 15 minute interval for Perkin Elmer spinning disk confocal microscope
• $3.75 per 15 minute interval for Leica Laser Micro Dissection system
• $3.75 per 15 minute interval for Nikon inverted multimode/time lapse/DIC/phase
• $2.50 per 15 minute interval for Leica inverted, Nikon upright and dissecting microscopes
• $5.00 per 15 minute interval for AFM
   
• $2.50 per 15 minute interval for image analysis work stations
  • Computers Brewster, Malus, Monarch [removed April 2006], Snell, and Young
• $0.50 per page from July 1, 2006 ($0.80 per page before July 1) on the Xerox Phaser 860 solid dye color printer
• $0.15 per page for Hewlett Packard 1320 Laser Jet

Training sessions

• Introductory Leica or Zeiss confocal 2x three hours - $140 for each user (max. 3 users per session)
• Introductory Spinning Disk confocal 2x two hours -  $140 for each user (max. 2 per session)
• Introductory AFM -  $140 for each user (max. 2 per session)
• Introductory fluorescence/DIC/phase microscopes digital camera 60~90 minutes - $70 per user
   
• Additional confocal training - $35 per hour
• Additional training - $8.75 per 15 minute interval.

Consultation - 1st 15 minutes free, additional time $8.75 per 15 minutes
Assistance - 1st 15 minutes free, additional time $8.75 per 15 minutes

Network or Computer consultation from M.C. - $8.75 per 15 minute interval

• Time is calculated in 15 minute intervals. 
• Partial intervals used are calculated as a full 15 minute if 1 or more minutes are incurred. 
• Periods of repeated log outs and logons will count as continuously used time.
• No shows will be charged for the time booked.

Room access activation is free if you already have a UNC SOM building access card.  (New card cost is determined by the School of Medicine Planning Office.)
